A Royal Escape: How Princess Haya Challenged the Ruler of Dubai in British Courts
In short: Princess Haya bint Hussein, an Olympic equestrian and daughter of Jordan's King Hussein, once lived at the heart of Dubai's ruling family. Her 2019 flight to London triggered a landmark legal battle, exposing a campaign of intimidation and revealing the limits of power when confronted by international law.
Born in 1974 to King Hussein of Jordan and Queen Alia, Princess Haya was educated at Oxford before building a career as an international athlete and humanitarian. In 2004, she married Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. For years, the couple appeared as fixtures of the global elite, frequently attending events like Royal Ascot. However, by 2019, Haya had grown suspicious regarding the treatment of two of the Sheikh's daughters, Shamsa and Latifa, who had been forcibly returned to Dubai after attempting to flee.
Following her own departure to the United Kingdom in April 2019, Haya sought protection through the High Court in London. The ensuing legal proceedings were unprecedented. In 2020, the court found that the Sheikh had orchestrated the abductions of his daughters and subjected Haya to a campaign of harassment, including threats and intimidation. The court further determined that the Sheikh had authorized the use of Pegasus spyware to monitor Haya, her legal team, and her security staff, describing the actions as a severe abuse of power and a breach of criminal law.
By March 2022, the High Court had granted Haya sole custody of her two children, Jalila and Zayed, and formally recognized her as a victim of domestic abuse. The court ordered the Sheikh to provide a substantial financial settlement, including a £251.5 million lump sum and ongoing payments for the children's welfare. The case remains a significant study in how international legal systems can address coercive behavior, even when involving figures of immense global prominence.
