Beyond the headlines: Meet the PRISMs driving the future of UK research investment
In short: While the name PRISM is often associated with high-stakes intelligence, in the UK research sector, it stands for something entirely different. Professional Research Investment and Strategy Managers are the backbone of large-scale academic growth, working to bridge the gap between complex funding landscapes and the delivery of vital research outcomes.
In the context of UK academia, a Professional Research Investment and Strategy Manager (PRISM) is a specialist tasked with enabling the delivery and growth of major research investments. These professionals operate within research organisations, managing large grants and driving the strategic development of research clusters. Unlike the intelligence program of the same name, this PRISM community is a grassroots network founded in 2020 to support those who navigate the increasingly complex requirements of modern research funding.
The PRISM network currently connects about 1350 members across 140 research organisations. Its primary mission is to address three interlinked challenges: career progression and professional development, recruitment and job security, and the broader recognition of these roles within the academic ecosystem. By providing training, resources, and a collective voice, the network aims to professionalise the management of research investment, ensuring that those responsible for these large-scale projects have the support and status they require to succeed.
Looking toward the future, the network is actively preparing for an increasingly digital research environment. The 2026 conference, held at King's College London, specifically focused on the shift toward digital research infrastructure, big data management, and the sustainability of digital outputs. This focus is supported by broader initiatives like the Research Professional Futures project, a £4.5 million national effort funded by Research England’s RED Fund. These projects seek to map the skills and experiences of research professionals, ensuring the workforce remains resilient and ready to lead in a rapidly evolving landscape.
The network’s strategy for 2026–2030, informed by a 2025 membership survey, underscores a commitment to long-term professional growth. Through training series on topics like stakeholder mapping, risk management, and adaptability, the community is building a robust framework for project delivery. By fostering peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and advocating for better recognition, the PRISM network is transforming how research investments are managed, ensuring that the people behind the data are as well-supported as the projects themselves.
