Artificial intelligence is streamlining the identification of human remains through dental analysis
In short: A scoping review of 28 research papers found that artificial intelligence is becoming a vital tool for forensic odontology. By automating the analysis of dental records, these technologies help experts identify individuals more efficiently, particularly in large-scale disasters where manual identification is too slow and complex.
The review categorized AI applications into four main areas: analyzing human bite marks, determining biological sex, estimating age, and performing dental comparisons. While machine learning is noted for its reliability in analyzing continuous morphometric parameters, deep learning is specifically suited for processing unstructured data like medical images.
The study used the Arksey and O'Malley framework to evaluate literature published between 2010 and 2022. A limitation of the current landscape is the need for large volumes of data for deep learning, though the review notes that transfer learning is being used to overcome these data shortages.
Why it matters: AI helps forensic experts identify people more quickly and accurately during mass disasters by automating complex dental analysis.
