The versatile maestro who conquered Europe and the American frontier
In short: From the legendary AC Milan era to the early days of Major League Soccer, Roberto Donadoni’s career spanned continents. A master of the wing and a tactical pioneer, he transitioned from a trophy-laden playing career to the high-pressure world of international management.
Roberto Donadoni was a cornerstone of the AC Milan dynasty during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A versatile midfielder capable of playing on either flank or through the center, he was a vital component of teams led by Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello. His trophy cabinet from his time in Milan is immense, including six Serie A titles, three European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. His resilience was tested in 1988 when a violent tackle by Red Star Belgrade's Goran Vasilijević left him unconscious with a broken jaw, yet he remained a key figure in Milan's international success.
Donadoni's influence extended far beyond Italy. In 1996, he became a pioneer for Major League Soccer, joining the NY/NJ MetroStars. He was a standout performer in the league's inaugural season, earning a place in the MLS Best XI and appearing as an All-Star. He eventually concluded his playing days in 2000 with Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Premier League, where he secured a league title.
As a manager, Donadoni faced the immense challenge of succeeding Marcello Lippi as the head coach of the Italy national team in 2006. While he led the Azzurri to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, his tenure was marked by volatility. Despite a contract extension, he was dismissed on 26 June 2008, following a clause that triggered termination if Italy failed to reach the semi-finals. His managerial journey continued through various Italian clubs like Napoli, Cagliari, and Parma—the latter of which faced bankruptcy in 2015—and even into the Chinese Super League with Shenzhen.
Though often remembered for his tactical intelligence and ability to orchestrate attacks, Donadoni's true passion lay in the selfless art of the assist. He once noted that nothing pleased him more than providing the assist for a score.
