How a banished Viking looter became the Duke of Normandy
In short: Explore the transformation of Rollo, a Viking warrior who traded raiding for rule. This documentary traces his journey from a Scandinavian exile to a Christian duke who reshaped the foundations of medieval Europe.
Banished from his homeland around 876, Rollo led a band of warriors across the North Sea, raiding coasts before launching daring attacks into the Kingdom of France. When military force proved insufficient, he pivoted to diplomacy.
In 911, King Charles the Simple granted Rollo land and legitimacy in exchange for his loyalty and conversion to Christianity. This transition from pagan warlord to the first Duke of Normandy established the Duchy of Normandy and paved the way for the rise of William the Conqueror.
