A legendary cavalryman who survived Stalin's purges by clinging to the age of horses.
In short: Semyon Budyonny was a celebrated Soviet hero whose bravery in the Russian Civil War made him a national icon. Yet, his stubborn refusal to embrace modern mechanized warfare led to catastrophic military failures. As a loyal ally to Stalin, he escaped the purges that claimed his more innovative peers.
Born into a poor peasant family in 1883, Semyon Budyonny rose from a farm laborer to one of the first five individuals appointed as a Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1935. His military reputation was forged during the Russian Civil War, where he founded the Red Cavalry. His exploits were so legendary that he became the subject of popular patriotic songs and even had a distinctive military hat, the budenovka, named in his honor.
Despite his battlefield courage, Budyonny remained a staunch traditionalist who viewed tanks with deep suspicion. He famously dismissed the necessity of armored corps, arguing that cavalry would remain the decisive force in any future conflict. This stance put him in direct opposition to Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky, a visionary who advocated for mechanized warfare. During the Great Purge of the late 1930s, Budyonny testified against Tukhachevsky, labeling his tank theories as sabotage. Tukhachevsky was executed, and Budyonny remained a pillar of the Soviet high command.
When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Budyonny’s limitations were exposed. Tasked with defending Ukraine, his adherence to outdated tactics and rigid orders from Stalin led to the encirclement of Soviet forces at Kiev and Uman. The disaster resulted in 1.5 million casualties, marking it as the largest encirclement in military history. Although he was removed from frontline command, his deep personal ties to Stalin ensured he avoided punishment. He spent the remainder of his career in administrative roles, including horse breeding, until his death in 1973 at age 90.
