Shadows rise as Sung Jin-woo embraces his new power
In short: Following the first season's conclusion, the animated adaptation of Chugong's web novel returns. In this second installment, the protagonist must navigate his evolving abilities as the Shadow Monarch while a decade-long mystery resurfaces to threaten the world.
The second season, officially titled Solo Leveling: Arise from the Shadow, picks up immediately following the narrative arc of the first season. The story centers on Sung Jin-woo as he begins to master his identity as the Shadow Monarch. While he attempts to keep these growing abilities a secret from his social circle, the tension escalates when a hunter, missing for nearly ten years, reappears with a warning of an impending catastrophe. The plot follows the protagonist's journey as he navigates his newfound role. This sequel continues the intense narrative established in the initial episodes.
The production features a high-profile creative team, with A-1 Pictures handling the animation and Shunsuke Nakashige serving as director. The musical landscape is defined by Hiroyuki Sawano's compositions, complemented by an opening theme, "Reawaker," performed by LiSA featuring Felix of Stray Kids, and an ending theme, "Un-Apex," by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure. Scriptwriting duties were assigned to Noboru Kimura. Character designs were crafted by Tomoko Sudo.
The series' release strategy involved a significant compilation film titled Solo Leveling: ReAwakening, which was screened in Japan between November 29 and December 12, 2024. This film was shown alongside the first two episodes of the new season. International distribution is split, with Crunchyroll managing rights for North America and select international territories, while Medialink handles Southeast Asia and Oceania, excluding Australia and New Zealand. In the United States and Canada, Crunchyroll began screening the compilation film on December 6, 2024.
