The record-breaking U2 compilation that promised a vanishing act
In short: When U2 released their first greatest hits in 1998, a marketing legend took hold. Fans believed a limited two-disc edition would be pulled from stores after just one week. While the scarcity never actually happened, the resulting frenzy drove unprecedented sales across the globe.
Released on 2 November 1998, 'The Best of 1980–1990' arrived as a curated retrospective of U2's decade of dominance. Alongside live tracks and a new take on the 1987 B-side 'Sweetest Thing', the set included popular singles. To drive interest, a limited-edition version containing a second disc of B-sides was released one week prior to the standard edition.
The marketing strategy surrounding the double-disc version was particularly potent. At the time, the official word suggested the two-disc set would only be available during its first week on sale before being withdrawn. Although this 'edict' never materialized, the perceived scarcity fueled massive demand. Selling 237,500 units, the two-disc edition reached number two on the Billboard 200 for the week commencing 21 November 1998 in the US. No group's greatest hits compilation had achieved a higher SoundScan-era sales figure during its initial week.
The album's commercial impact was felt globally. In the United Kingdom, the limited edition hit number one on 14 November 1998, while in Canada, the double-disc version reached the top of the Billboard Canadian Albums Chart. In Ireland, the release achieved the highest single-week sales recorded since the IRMA began keeping records in 1993. Beyond the charts, the album's visual identity remained rooted in the band's history; the cover features Peter Rowen, the brother of Bono's friend Guggi, a figure who had appeared on several of the band's earliest covers.
