The holy war that ended in a Christian massacre

The Fourth Crusade: The Holy War That Destroyed Christendom · 37:23 · Video: History Mapped Out · Watch at the source

In short: Watch how a crusade intended to reclaim Jerusalem instead dismantled the Byzantine Empire. This video explores the debt-driven detour that led crusaders to sack their own capital, permanently altering the map of Europe and the Middle East.

Launched in 1202 to retake the Holy Land, the Fourth Crusade was derailed by a massive debt to Venice. Under the leadership of Doge Enrico Dandolo, the crusaders were diverted first to attack the Christian city of Zara, then into a Byzantine civil war.

The campaign culminated in April 1204 with the brutal sack of Constantinople. This event shattered the Byzantine Empire, solidified the Great Schism between Western and Eastern churches, and established Venice as a Mediterranean trade monopoly. Crucially, it left the region vulnerable to the Kayı tribe, who would eventually form the Ottoman Empire.
