The forgotten intellectual giants who anticipated the European Renaissance
In short: Before the West reached its own enlightenment, the Arab world was already undergoing a profound intellectual revolution. This video explores the lives and rivalries of two Central Asian polymaths who shaped global science for centuries.
A thousand years ago, Ibn Sina and Biruni achieved breakthroughs in medicine, astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Until the 1500s, Biruni's earth measurements were the most accurate ever recorded; he also proposed a sun-centred cosmos and suggested that North and South America were populated lands.
For a period of six centuries, the medical works of Ibn Sina served as the primary reference across India, the Middle East, and Europe. His metaphysical writings also influenced major European thinkers like St. Thomas Aquinas. The video contextualizes these achievements by exploring the human dimension of their rivalry and their efforts to transcend the works of the Greeks.
