How the Greek hero Bellerophon tamed the legendary winged horse Pegasus
In short: Bellerophon is a central figure in Greek mythology, celebrated for his feat of taming the winged horse Pegasus. This account explores his origins, his exile from Corinth, and the treacherous circumstances that led him to Lycia.
Born to the mortal king Glaukus of Corinth and the sea god Poseidon, Bellerophon was forced into exile after killing two men. He sought purification at the court of King Proteus in Argos. However, the king's wife, Anteia, falsely accused Bellerophon of assault after he rejected her advances.
Bound by the sacred rites of hospitality, Proteus refused to execute the hero himself. Instead, he sent Bellerophon to Lycia carrying a tablet that contained instructions for his death.
