The naval skirmish that escalated the United States' involvement in Vietnam

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident (1964) · 3:13 · Video: Simple History · Watch at the source

In short: In August 1964, two U.S. destroyers reported unprovoked attacks by North Vietnamese torpedo boats. This specific naval encounter in the Gulf of Tonkin became the catalyst for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, providing the legal justification for President Lyndon B. Johnson to significantly increase American military presence in the Vietnam War.

From August 2 to August 4, 1964, this event occurred within the Gulf of Tonkin near Vietnam. On August 2, the USS Maddox reported being approached by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats. Despite the Maddox firing warning shots, the boats continued their approach and opened fire. The destroyer called for air support from the nearby carrier USS Ticonderoga, resulting in a firefight that left one torpedo boat badly damaged while the Maddox escaped without harm.

The context of these events was highly complex. During its reconnaissance and communications interception patrol, the Maddox was active while South Vietnamese commandos raided North Vietnamese military sites and radar stations on Hon Me and Hon Ngu islands during July 30–31, 1964. It is noted that the Maddox was likely unaware of these specific raids when it observed the torpedo boats in pursuit of South Vietnamese vessels.

The political consequences were immediate and profound. After these reported strikes, the situation was presented to the U.S. Congress was told on August 5, 1964, that two unprovoked attacks had happened. This led directly to the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This legislative action granted President Lyndon B. Johnson the authority to greatly escalate U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War, marking the transition into direct American combat operations.

Today, the incident remains a subject of historical scrutiny and controversy due to the complex interplay between reconnaissance missions, South Vietnamese raids, and the subsequent escalation of the conflict.
