The final gamble of an emperor in the pouring rain
In short: On June 18, 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte stood in the mud of Belgium, looking at the campfires of his enemies. He believed he had them cornered, but two missing pieces of information would turn his final gamble into a definitive collapse of his empire.
The Battle of Waterloo was the climactic conclusion of the "Hundred Days," the period during which Napoleon returned from exile on the island of Elba to seize power. After landing near Cannes on March 1, 1815, with only 1,000 men, he secured the support of the rural peasantry and forced Louis XVIII to flee. However, his military advantage was hampered by the fact that Louis XVIII had abolished conscription, forcing Napoleon to frantically raise 80,000 men in just eight weeks to bolster his forces.
The scale of the confrontation was massive. Napoleon commanded 72,000 troops against a combined allied force of approximately 113,000. Forces under Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher totalled roughly 45,000 Prussians, joining the Duke of Wellington's 68,000-strong allied army made up of German, Belgian, Dutch, and British soldiers. While Napoleon could have commanded over 160,000 first-line troops, many were relegated to border defense, leaving him with a smaller force than his potential for the decisive clash south of Waterloo village.
The battle's outcome was shaped by specific tactical moments and stories of extreme bravery. It featured a fortified farmhouse that held out against overwhelming odds, a pivotal cavalry charge that saved Wellington’s army, and the final desperate gamble of the Imperial Guard. This victory concluded 23 years of repeated fighting across Europe involving France and other nations, deciding the continent's destiny and the ultimate collapse of the "Little Corporal.", 1815-06-18: Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo., 1815-03-01: Napoleon lands near Cannes with 1,000 men., 1815-03-20: Napoleon arrives in Paris and Louis XVIII flees., 1815-03-25: Great Britain, Prussia, Austria, and Russia sign an alliance treaty., 1815-06-18: The Battle of Waterloo takes place 3 miles south of Waterloo village., 1815-07-01: Estimated date for the allied invasion of France.
