Can the supposedly impenetrable Tower of London be escaped by its prisoners?

The Most Daring Escapes From the Tower of London · 16:21 · Video: History Hit · Watch at the source

In short: For over 900 years, the Tower of London served as a formidable prison for thousands. While most inmates faced grim fates, a select few managed to bypass its walls. Historian Matt Lewis explores the stories of these rare escapees who defied one of history's most notorious fortresses.

Since 1100, the Tower of London has functioned as a prison for traitors, heretics, and royalty. Out of more than 8,000 people held within its walls, many never left alive, and others were executed. However, for a small group of fortunate individuals, the Tower's reputation as an impenetrable citadel proved to be an exaggeration.

The site has served many purposes beyond a prison, including a royal palace, a mint, an arsenal, and a home for the crown jewels. Matt Lewis examines how these few prisoners managed to overcome the security of a site that has been central to English life for nearly a millennium.
