How a small rebellion in Sardis ignited a series of epic ancient conflicts
In short: The Persian Wars pitted the Achaemenid Empire against Ancient Greece in a struggle that defined the 5th century BCE. This video explores the pivotal battles and key figures that shaped this monumental clash, from the Ionian Revolt to the decisive final stand at Plataea.
The conflict originated from the Ionian Revolt and the subsequent sacking of the Persian-held city of Sardis by Athenian and Eretrian forces. Under the rule of Darius the Great, the Persian Empire engaged the Greek city-states in a series of legendary encounters, including the Battle of Marathon, where Greek forces led by Callimachus or Miltiades faced the Persian commanders Datis and Artephernes.
Following the death of Darius, his son Xerxes assumed leadership, overseeing the battles of Thermopylae and Artemision. While the Persians achieved victory at Thermopylae, the tide turned at the naval Battle of Salamis. The wars concluded in 479 BCE with a decisive Greek victory at the Battle of Plataea, marking the end of the major confrontations between the two powers.
