The knife that gave a nation its name

In short: The word 'Saxon' is more than a label for an ancient tribe; it likely stems from a common tool. While the Saxons of Britain and the continent shared a name, they forged distinct destinies—one leading to the birth of the English nation, the other to absorption by the Frankish Empire.

Inhabiting territory between the North Sea and Holstein, the Saxons constituted a Germanic group from the area above the Elbe River. Their name is believed to derive from the 'seax,' a common type of knife they utilized. While they were often characterized as coastal raiders in the late Roman Empire, their precise origins remain a subject of academic debate. Some theories suggest a smaller homeland in Northern Albingia, while others point to the coastal regions of modern-day Germany.

The migration of Saxons to Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries CE fundamentally reshaped the island's demographics. Alongside the Angles, Frisians, and Jutes, they established several kingdoms, including Kent, Wessex (West Saxons), Sussex (South Saxons), and Essex (East Saxons). This collective group became known as 'Anglo-Saxons'—a term used primarily to distinguish the British inhabitants from their continental cousins. Interestingly, the term initially served as a geographical distinction rather than an ethnic one, only gaining widespread use after 1066.

On the continent, the Saxons faced a different fate. They were eventually absorbed by the Franks under Charlemagne following the Saxon Wars (772–804). Despite this conquest, Saxon traditions deeply influenced Germanic culture and the development of Christian observances. In Britain, the Anglo-Saxon period (410–1066) saw the development of Old English and the promotion of literacy by kings like Alfred the Great. While the continental Saxons ceased to exist as a distinct political entity, their legacy persists in the names of German states like Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
