The 18th-century London palace built by a man who had everything
In short: Alice Loxton explores Spencer House, a hidden architectural gem in St James’s. Built by the First Earl Spencer, this opulent residence reveals the story of a man who inherited two massive fortunes and enjoyed a rare, genuine love match in an era of arranged marriages.
John, the First Earl Spencer, was born in 1734 and descended from two of the most powerful figures in British history: Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, and the Third Earl of Sunderland. By inheriting both their fortunes, he became one of the wealthiest men in the country.
Rather than a typical political alliance, John’s marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Georgiana Poyntz, was a genuine partnership. The couple commissioned Spencer House as a grand London counterpart to their country estate, Althorp, selecting a prime location overlooking Green Park to showcase their status and affection.
