How an American sitcom found a new home in Mumbai
In short: In 2012, Disney Channel India launched a local reimagining of a global hit. Set within the luxurious, fictional Raj Mahal Hotel, this adaptation swapped American settings for the vibrant energy of Mumbai, bringing a familiar brand of twin-led mischief to a new audience.
The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir, which aired between 8 April 2012 and 18 August 2013, served as an Indian adaptation of the American Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. While the original centered on twins in a US hotel, this version relocated the chaos to the Raj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai—a setting that functioned as a parody of the real-world Hotel Taj.
The narrative engine of the show relied on the dynamic between twin brothers Karan and Kabir Jaiswal. Karan, the 10-minute older twin, was portrayed as an outgoing and immature boy, whereas Kabir was the more studative and kind brother. Their lives were overseen by their single mother, Preeti Jaiswal, who balanced her role as a talented singer with her position as the hotel's assistant manager.
The ensemble cast mirrored the archetypes of the parent series through localized characters. This included Rani Uberoi, the wealthy heiress with her own private suite, and the strict hotel manager, Mr. Maan Singh, whose sophisticated vocabulary often clashed with the twins' schemes. The show also featured supporting staff like the hardworking bellboy Jang Bahadur and the candy-counter girl, Vinnie.
As the series progressed into its second season, certain elements underwent significant shifts. The character of Vinnie was replaced by Binnie Kukreja, a change that altered the character's background while maintaining her core personality. Similarly, the hotel engineer known as 'Digital' in the first season was succeeded by a character named Toolkit in the second.
