In short: Before he was a billionaire private equity titan, Tom Gores was a college janitor and telemarketer. His journey from a small childhood home in Nazareth to the ownership of the Detroit Pistons is a masterclass in identifying undervalued assets and aggressive corporate restructuring.

Born in Nazareth, Israel, in 1964, Gores moved to Michigan as a young child. His early professional life was far removed from the high-stakes world of Beverly Hills finance; he worked as a grocery clerk in Genesee and later held manual labor jobs, including janitorial work, while studying construction management at Michigan State University.

The foundation of his wealth, Platinum Equity, was established in 1995 in Sherman Oaks. Gores built the firm through a strategy of identifying struggling or unloved business divisions. His first major success involved acquiring Litigation Services, Inc., an unprofitable firm, for $200,000 and returning it to profitability in just six months. This pattern of acquisition continued through the late 1990s, with Gores leading 32 deals between 1996 and 2001, often targeting units from major corporations like Motorola and Alcatel.

His business acumen extended into professional sports when he and Platinum Equity purchased the Detroit Pistons' parent company, Palace Sports and Entertainment, for $325 million in 2011. By 2015, he had transitioned to sole ownership. The value of the franchise saw a massive surge, rising by an estimated $775 million by 2018. Beyond basketball, Gores has expanded his portfolio to include a 27% stake in the Los Angeles Chargers and significant real estate holdings.

Despite the scale of his $10.1 billion net worth, Gores remains deeply involved in regional philanthropy, particularly in Detroit and Flint. His initiatives range from establishing allergy centers in Los Angeles to funding community centers in Detroit's River Rouge Park and providing relief for the Flint water crisis.
