How two kings split the entire world with a single line
In short: In 1494, Spain and Portugal attempted to settle territorial disputes by drawing a line across the globe. This ambitious agreement, brokered by the Papacy, aimed to divide newly explored lands, effectively partitioning the non-Christian world between two rival maritime empires during the Age of Discovery.
The Treaty of Tordesillas emerged from intense competition following Christopher Columbus’s voyages. To prevent conflict, the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile sought papal backing for their claims. This led the Spanish-born Pope Alexander VI to issue bulls establishing a demarcation line 100 leagues—roughly 320 miles—west of the Cape Verde Islands. Under this initial arrangement, Spain secured exclusive rights to lands discovered west of the line, while Portuguese expeditions were restricted to the east.
However, the initial division proved insufficient for Portugal. King João II was dissatisfied, fearing the line left his sailors with inadequate room for African voyages and did not sufficiently protect Portuguese interests. Consequently, ambassadors met in Tordesillas, northwestern Spain, to renegotiate the boundary. They successfully moved the line further west to 370 leagues—approximately 1,185 miles—from the Cape Verde Islands. This shift proved historically significant, as it allowed Portugal to claim Brazil after Pedro Álvares Cabral reached its shores in 1500.
While the treaty was sanctioned by Pope Julius II in 1506, its geopolitical impact was uneven. The agreement was intended to prevent occupation of territories already held by Christian rulers, yet other European powers facing the Atlantic Ocean never formally accepted this papal division. Despite this lack of universal recognition, the line shaped the future of the Americas, providing the legal basis for Brazil's eventual expansion deep into the South American interior.
