In short: Before becoming a veteran of four space missions, Vance Brand was a test pilot navigating the complexities of Cold War aviation. His career spanned from the historic U.S.-Soviet joint flight to commanding the first operational Space Shuttle missions, marking him as a singular figure in the evolution of American space exploration.

Born in 1931 in Longmont, Colorado, Vance Brand followed a path defined by rigorous technical training. After serving as a Marine Corps aviator and working as a Lockheed test pilot on F-104 programs, he joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 1966. His early tenure included support roles for Apollo 8 and 13, and he stood ready to command a rescue mission for Skylab 3, though it was ultimately deemed unnecessary. His operational experience made him a critical asset for the agency's transition into the Shuttle era.

Brand’s first spaceflight in 1975, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, served as a landmark moment for international diplomacy, featuring the first docking between American and Soviet spacecraft. The mission nearly ended in tragedy during descent when the crew inadvertently inhaled nitrogen tetroxide gas, causing Brand to lose consciousness. Despite this, he continued his career, becoming the only astronaut from the Apollo generation to fly the Space Shuttle after the 1986 Challenger disaster.

Throughout his later career, Brand commanded three Shuttle missions, including STS-5 in 1982, which marked the program's first fully operational flight. He later oversaw the deployment of the Manned Maneuvering Unit on STS-41-B and led astronomical research on STS-35. After retiring from his final NASA roles in 2008, he continued his lifelong connection to the outdoors by donating 40 acres of land to the Rocky Mountain Conservancy in 2019, aiming to expand the national park he frequented since childhood.
