Lost travelogue footage from 1940 reveals a vanishing glimpse of the past

Various Kahop Collection: 6 Guatemala, Grand Canyon (1940) · 21:53 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: This collection of outtakes from Kate and Arthur Tode offers a rare, unedited look at travel in 1940. Captured on Ansco film, these clips document diverse locations ranging from the Grand Canyon to tropical coastlines, preserved despite the film stock's tendency to fade rapidly after development.

The footage, held by the Penn Museum, consists of eight un-spliced lengths of film on a single reel. The scenes capture a variety of subjects, including aerial views of the Grand Canyon, a three-story adobe structure nearby, and candid moments of travelers on cruise ships and beaches. Other segments feature tropical gardens and the grave of Ferdinand Paleologus.

The exact locations remain partially unidentified, with some scenes possibly depicting Guatemala, the San Blas Islands, Panama, or Havana, Cuba. The use of Ansco film stock is particularly notable for its historical fragility, as the material began to fade immediately upon development, making this surviving record a significant artifact of mid-20th-century travel documentation.
