Vazgen Sargsyan: The Armenian strongman who built an army and toppled a president
In short: Vazgen Sargsyan was the architect of the modern Armenian military and a kingmaker who reshaped the nation's politics. From leading volunteer battalions in the Nagorno-Karabakh War to forcing a president out of office, he became the ultimate power broker before his life was cut short in a parliamentary massacre.
Born in 1959, Vazgen Sargsyan rose to prominence during the late 1980s as a leader in the movement to unify Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. When Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Sargsyan was appointed the country's first defence minister. He is widely credited with building a combat-capable army from scratch, professionalizing the force, and regulating military operations throughout the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. His influence was cemented by the formation of Yerkrapah, a powerful union of war veterans that became a central pillar of his political authority.
Sargsyan's role as a 'power minister' extended deep into domestic governance. In 1998, he orchestrated the resignation of President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who had proposed a 'step-by-step' settlement for the Karabakh conflict that Sargsyan and other hardliners vehemently opposed. By leveraging the loyalty of the military and the largest faction in the National Assembly, Sargsyan effectively became the de facto decision-maker in Armenia. He later helped Robert Kocharyan ascend to the presidency, though their relationship subsequently soured, leading to a period of intense political instability marked by mysterious assassinations of top officials.
The trajectory of his life ended abruptly on 27 October 1999, when he was assassinated alongside Prime Minister Karen Demirchyan and six others during a shooting in the Armenian parliament. While the perpetrators were sentenced to life in prison, the event remains shrouded in conspiracy theories regarding potential involvement by domestic rivals or foreign powers. Despite his controversial legacy—including criticism from human rights organizations for his undemocratic methods and role in electoral violations—Sargsyan is officially honored as a national hero, recognized for his foundational contributions to the security and statehood of independent Armenia.
