The evolution of a supervillain from Italian scientist to Spider-Man's nemesis
In short: Before he was a mainstay of the Sinister Six, the Vulture was a completely different character. From a theoretical physicist wielding atomic bombs to a disgraced engineer in a scrap-metal flight suit, the history of this Marvel icon is a complex web of stolen identities and tragic transformations.
The Vulture mantle began in December 1953 with Isidoro Scarlotti, an Italian scientist and PhD in theoretical physics. Unlike the modern version, Scarlottii lacked flight, instead using a mechanized mask to lead the 'International League of Criminals' and threatening the world with super atomic bombs. He famously used robot duplicates of the Human Torch and Toro to discredit them.
The character's most enduring form, Adrian Toomes, debuted in May 1963. A brilliant but embittered electronics engineer from Staten Island, Toomes turned to crime after his partner, Gregory Bestman, embezzled their profits. Using a flight harness made from scrap parts, Toomes became a recurring Spider-Man foe and a founding member of the Sinister Six. While Stan Lee initially envisioned a heavy-set villain inspired by actor Sydney Greenstreet, artist Steve Ditko designed him to be gaunt and swift to better utilize comic book panel space.
The mantle has seen several shifts, including Blackie Drago, a former cellmate who stole Toomes's suit in 1967. Other incarnations include the hybrid Clifton Shallot and the recurring enemy Jimmy Natale. Toomes's personal history is marked by extreme volatility, including periods of regained youth through biochemical means and even the theft of Spider-Man's youth [S1:p14, S1:mutated]. His life has been defined by both technological mastery and profound tragedy, including the accidental death of Nathan Lubensky during a mid-air struggle.
