Is the Hollywood image of the slow, clunky medieval knight actually accurate?
In short: History Hit presenters Luke Tomes and Louee Dessent visit the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds to test the reality of medieval knighthood. By donning full suits of armor and attempting a series of physical challenges, they investigate the true capabilities and dangers faced by knights in the Middle Ages.
The video explores the practical experience of being a knight by putting modern participants through a medieval gauntlet. This includes testing their mobility while armored—specifically whether it is possible to sprint—and evaluating the actual weight and cumbersomeness of the equipment. By challenging the common cinematic trope of the slow-moving, clunky knight, the presenters aim to uncover how these warriors truly functioned.
The tournament challenge features historical tests of skill, such as picking up a glove from horseback and navigating the quintain. The experience culminates in full contact jousting against a real opponent, providing a firsthand look at the physical demands and inherent dangers of medieval tournament life.
