How personal heritage transforms the way we experience ancient museum artifacts today
In short: The Penn Museum connects visitors with history by pairing artifacts with guides who share a cultural connection to the objects' origins. This program offers a unique lens on the past by bridging the gap between ancient items and the lived experiences of contemporary individuals.
The Global Guides Tour Program relies on the premise that history is best understood through the voices of those who grew up in the cultures represented by the museum's collection. By featuring guides who possess a personal link to the regions where these artifacts were created, the museum aims to bring its exhibits to life.
This initiative was supported by funding from the Barra Foundation. The program was developed through partnerships with HIAS Pennsylvania and the Nationality Services Center to facilitate these cross-cultural storytelling experiences.
