Why did France wait six centuries to finally absorb the Duchy of Brittany?

Why did it take so long for France to conquer Brittany? (Short Animated Documentary) · 3:32 · Video: History Matters · Watch at the source

In short: Despite France's overwhelming size and military power, it failed to conquer the neighboring Duchy of Brittany for over six hundred years. This documentary explains why the French monarchy ultimately relied on marriage rather than force to secure the region.

For more than six centuries, the Duchy of Brittany maintained its position on the north-west frontier of France. Although the French kingdom was significantly larger and more powerful, it never successfully conquered the Bretons through military action.

Instead of direct conquest, the French kings were forced to wait for opportunities to marry into the Breton ruling family to gain control. This video examines the geopolitical and historical factors that prevented France from simply seizing the territory during this long period.
