Why did the Boers fail to unite against British expansion in the 19th century?
In short: Despite sharing a common culture and a mutual adversary, the Boers remained politically fractured during their conflicts with the British. This documentary examines why this lack of unity hindered their resistance and ultimately led to the dissolution of the Boer Republics.
Throughout the 1800s, the Boers maintained a contentious relationship with the British and their South African colonies. When open warfare broke out twice during the late 19th century, the absence of a unified Boer political front significantly weakened their defensive capabilities.
This internal division proved catastrophic for their sovereignty, culminating in the total collapse of the Boer Republics. By 1910, these territories were formally incorporated into the Union of South Africa, marking the end of their independent status.
