Why did leaders create a unified Yugoslavia despite deep-seated ethnic divisions?

Why was Yugoslavia formed in the first place? (Short Animated Documentary) · 4:02 · Video: History Matters · Watch at the source

In short: While Yugoslavia is often remembered for its turbulent collapse, its origins reveal a deliberate effort to consolidate South Slav territories. This documentary explores the geopolitical motivations behind the state's creation and the subsequent attempt to forge a singular national identity.

The state was established on December 1, 1918, initially under the name Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. This entity brought together the sovereign kingdoms of Serbia and Montenegro alongside various South Slav regions formerly held by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dalmatia, Croatia-Slavonia, Slovenia, and Vojvodina.

In 1929, King Alexander I rebranded the nation as Yugoslavia. This shift was a strategic move intended to suppress regional nationalisms and encourage a cohesive national character, though the country's later history would be defined by the very ethnic tensions that this unification sought to mitigate.
