In short: Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb was a decorated German general who commanded Army Group North during the invasion of the Soviet Union. While he later claimed ignorance of the Holocaust, he accepted massive secret payments from Hitler and oversaw units that systematically murdered civilians and cooperated with SS death squads.

Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb rose through the ranks of the Bavarian Army, earning nobility during World War I. By the start of World War II, he was one of Germany's most senior generals. Despite his initial opposition to the invasion of neutral Belgium, he successfully led the breakthrough of the Maginot Line in 1940. His career reached its peak during Operation Barbarossa, where he commanded Army Group North with the objective of capturing Leningrad.

Leeb’s tenure in the East was defined by ideological brutality. He was present when Hitler outlined plans for a war of annihilation against the Soviet Union. Under Leeb’s jurisdiction, his forces and the Einsatzgruppen death squads murdered Jewish populations. Leeb was informed of these massacres by his rear area commander, yet he chose to maintain distance rather than intervene. He even received 250,000 ℛ︁ℳ︁ in secret bribes from Hitler in 1941, followed by a valuable estate in 1943, cementing his financial ties to the regime.

After being relieved of command in 1942, Leeb survived the war and faced trial at Nuremberg. His defense team argued he was a humane soldier unaware of the criminal activities occurring under his command. While he was convicted of transmitting the criminal Barbarossa Decree, he was sentenced only to time served. His closing statement, which framed German officers as tragic victims of history, helped establish a narrative of innocence that persisted in West Germany for decades until his death in 1956.
