The Dutch explorer who accidentally discovered Australia while searching for gold and trade
In short: In 1605, Willem Janszoon set sail from the Dutch East Indies aboard the Duyfken, hoping to find new trade routes and gold in New Guinea. Instead, he became the first European to record a landfall on the Australian continent, mapping a coastline he mistakenly believed was part of New Guinea.
Willem Janszoon, a Dutch navigator, departed Bantam in late 1605 on a mission to explore the lands of New Guinea. Sailing the Duyfken, he navigated into the Torres Strait, reaching the western side of the Cape York Peninsula. On February 26, 1606, he made the first recorded European landfall on the Australian continent near the Pennefather River. Throughout this expedition, Janszoon charted approximately 320 kilometres of coastline, ultimately turning back at a location he named Cape Keer-Weer, which translates to Cape Return.
The voyage was marked by significant hardship and conflict. Historical accounts, including those from later explorers like Jan Carstenszoon, indicate that the crew engaged in several violent encounters with local Aboriginal people. While the exact details remain debated, it is estimated that nine crew members were killed during the expedition. Some interpretations suggest these deaths occurred during attempts to trade or secure resources like water and firewood, with tensions potentially exacerbated by the crew's use of muskets.
Janszoon's expedition was part of a broader Dutch interest in the region, though the Dutch East India Company showed little long-term interest in colonizing the land they eventually named New Holland. Following his 1606 voyage, other Dutch explorers continued to map the north and west coasts of Australia throughout the 17th century. Despite the historical significance of his landfall, Janszoon remained unaware that he had reached a new continent, remaining convinced that the territory was merely a southern extension of New Guinea.
