The Guernsey Police officers who risked everything to steal from Nazi occupiers
In short: During the German occupation of Guernsey, a group of local policemen engaged in a dangerous act of resistance. They systematically stole supplies from the Nazis to feed their starving community, fully aware that discovery meant brutal punishment, forced labor, or public disgrace.
The occupation of Guernsey between 1940 and 1945 created extreme scarcity, leaving locals to survive on stale bread while the Nazis maintained stores of butter and alcohol. Faced with these conditions, several Guernsey police officers chose to act as modern-day Robin Hoods, pilfering these goods to share with their families and neighbors.
The risks were immense. If caught, these officers faced severe beatings, public humiliation, and the threat of being deported to labor camps abroad to build infrastructure for the German war effort. Despite the constant danger of being branded traitors by their own community, these men prioritized the survival of their fellow citizens over their own safety.
