How a 1981 comic book storyline reshaped the X-Men film franchise's entire timeline
In short: The 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past bridged two distinct cinematic eras by sending Wolverine back to 1973. By preventing a pivotal assassination, the story erased a dystopian future where Sentinels hunted mutants, effectively rebooting the franchise's continuity and allowing for a thriving, reimagined timeline for the X-Men.
The film was inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, which depicted a dark future where mutants faced internment. While the original comic featured Kate Pryde sending her consciousness into her younger self, the film adaptation shifted this role to Wolverine. Screenwriter Simon Kinberg and director Bryan Singer determined that Wolverine’s regenerative abilities and ageless appearance made him the most logical candidate to survive the physical toll of time travel, while also serving as the franchise's most recognizable protagonist.
Production was marked by significant creative shifts. Matthew Vaughn, who directed the prequel X-Men: First Class, originally envisioned a trilogy where Days of Future Past would serve as the grand finale. He departed the project when the studio opted to accelerate the timeline, choosing to produce Kingsman: The Secret Service instead. Singer, who directed the first two films in the series, returned to helm the production, bringing back key crew members and integrating cast members from both the original trilogy and the prequel series.
The narrative mechanism relies on a complex interplay between 1973 and 2023. In the future, Sentinels—robots designed by Bolivar Trask—have decimated the mutant population. By traveling to 1973, Wolverine prevents Mystique from assassinating Trask, an act that had previously triggered the government's approval of the Sentinel program. This intervention fundamentally alters history, erasing the dystopian future and allowing the X-Men to exist in a restored, thriving present. The film's success, grossing $746 million, solidified its place as a pivotal moment in the series, leading to the 2016 sequel X-Men: Apocalypse.
