In short: Released just weeks after his sudden death in 1988, You Got It marked a remarkable comeback for Roy Orbison. Co-written with his Traveling Wilburys bandmates, the song returned him to the top 10 for the first time in a quarter-century, cementing his legacy with a final, soaring vocal performance.

The creation of You Got It was a collaborative effort between Roy Orbison and his bandmates from the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. Written during the 1987 Christmas season, the track was recorded in April 1988 at the Los Angeles garage of guitarist Mike Campbell. The recording session featured a legendary lineup, including Lynne, Petty, and former Beatle George Harrison, who provided instrumentation and backing vocals but remained uncredited on the final release. The song was later mixed at Harrison's home, Friar Park, in England.

Orbison's only public performance of the song occurred on November 19, 1988, at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium. This mimed rendition, captured just 17 days before his fatal heart attack on December 6, 1988, became the centerpiece of the song's official music video. When the single was officially released on January 3, 1989, it achieved significant commercial success, reaching number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Adult Contemporary chart. It also secured top-five positions in 10 other countries, marking a poignant return to prominence for the singer.

The song's enduring appeal was further demonstrated in 1995 when Bonnie Raitt recorded a version for the film Boys on the Side. Critics at the time of the original release praised the track for showcasing Orbison's signature vocal style, which remained both fluid and capable of generating intense excitement. The song remains a testament to a unique creative partnership that brought together some of the most influential figures in rock history during the final year of Orbison's life.
