Adam Ant transformed from a punk-era bassist into a chart-topping new wave icon
In short: Born Stuart Leslie Goddard, the musician behind the flamboyant Adam and the Ants persona dominated the early 1980s music scene. After pivoting from punk roots to a signature sound that defined a generation, he navigated shifting industry tides, personal health struggles, and a resilient, decades-long return to the stage.
Born in 1954, Stuart Leslie Goddard began his musical journey playing bass in the band Bazooka Joe. His artistic trajectory shifted dramatically in 1975 after witnessing the Sex Pistols, an experience that inspired him to reinvent himself. Adopting the name Adam Ant—a moniker chosen for its resilience—he formed Adam and the Ants in 1977. The group eventually became a central force in the New Romantic movement, characterized by their theatrical aesthetic and high-energy sound.
The band's commercial peak arrived between 1980 and 1981 with albums like Kings of the Wild Frontier and Prince Charming, which produced multiple UK number-one singles such as "Stand and Deliver." Following the group's dissolution in 1982, Ant launched a successful solo career with the album Friend or Foe. His hit "Goody Two Shoes" achieved international success, reaching the top of the charts in the UK and Australia while marking his first major breakthrough on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Ant's career faced significant challenges in the following decades, including a shift toward acting and a period of professional turbulence that saw albums shelved and record deals severed. Throughout these years, he grappled with bipolar disorder, a struggle he later documented openly. Despite these obstacles, he maintained a dedicated following and initiated a major musical comeback starting in 2010. This period saw him return to independent production, extensive international touring, and the release of new material, proving the enduring appeal of his unique musical identity.
