In short: How does a data manager become the gatekeeper for some of music's most storied voices? Anti- Records didn't just launch as a business; it emerged as a curated home for veteran artists seeking a different kind of creative dignity after leaving their previous labels.

Andy Kaulkin created Anti- in 1999, establishing it as a companion label for Epitaph Records. Kaulkin’s path to the helm of a record label was unconventional, rooted in the logistical backbone of the industry. Before founding Anti-, he spent years at Epitaph, rising from managing data systems to heading marketing, and eventually serving as the label's president until 1998.

The label's identity was forged through a commitment to high-caliber, often overlooked artistry. It gained immediate national attention with the 1999 release of Tom Waits's Mule Variations, an album that eventually won a Grammy Award. This success established a precedent for the label: prioritizing distinct, vivid storytelling and seasoned musicality over fleeting trends.

Under Kaulkin's stewardship, Anti- became a destination for legendary figures in R&B, blues, and soul. The label attracted veterans like Solomon Burke, Bettye LaVette, and Mavis Staples, many of whom joined after departing other labels. This curation was driven by personal connection; for instance, Mavis Staples joined following a direct meeting between Kaulkin and her manager, while other artists were signed based on the specific quality of their narratives.

Kaulkin’s own musical pedigree further informed the label's DNA. He was not merely an executive but a practitioner who played piano on Merle Haggard's "Haggard (Like I've Never Been Before)" and served as a composer, musician, and producer on the album Blues Got Soul by King Ernest. This dual identity as a data-savvy executive and a hands-on musician allowed Anti- to bridge the gap between industry mechanics and artistic integrity.
