In short: Founded in 2005 by Scott Borchetta, Big Machine Records launched the career of Taylor Swift and redefined country music distribution. Yet, the label is best remembered for a high-stakes master recording dispute that sparked a massive industry shift, forever changing how artists approach their own creative catalogs and streaming rights.

Big Machine Records began in September 2005 as a Nashville-based venture between Scott Borchetta and country singer Toby Keith. Borchetta, a former DreamWorks executive, famously recruited Taylor Swift after meeting her at the Bluebird Café. The label quickly found success, with Jack Ingram’s 'Wherever You Are' hitting number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs in 2006. By 2010, Swift had become the label's first Grammy winner, securing four awards including Album of the Year for Fearless.

The label's trajectory shifted in 2019 when Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings purchased Big Machine for $300 million. This acquisition triggered a public conflict with Swift over the ownership of her first six albums' master recordings. In response, Swift began a project to re-record and release her early work, starting with 'Fearless (Taylor's Version)' in April 2021. The rights to her original masters were later sold to Shamrock Holdings in 2020 without her involvement, further fueling the artist's push for creative autonomy.

Beyond the Swift dispute, Big Machine navigated complex industry challenges, including the rise of digital streaming. In 2014, Borchetta famously withdrew Swift’s catalog from Spotify, citing concerns over royalty payouts, though the music returned in 2017. The label also expanded into diverse ventures, such as launching Big Machine Vodka in 2017. Following a 2021 acquisition by HYBE Corporation, Borchetta remained CEO until February 2026, when he departed to return to independent entrepreneurship, taking the Big Machine name and logo with him while leaving behind the label's infrastructure and roster to be rebranded as Blue Highway Records.
