The Manson Family member who spent decades seeking parole after his 1972 conviction
In short: Bruce McGregor Davis was a drifter who became Charles Manson's right-hand man. After participating in the murders of Gary Hinman and Donald Shea, he spent over five decades behind bars. Despite being found suitable for parole seven times, he remained imprisoned until his death at age 83 in 2026.
Born in 1942 in Monroe, Louisiana, Bruce McGregor Davis lived a transient life before joining the Manson Family. After dropping out of the University of Tennessee, he hitchhiked to California in 1962. By 1968, he had met Charles Manson in Topanga, later claiming he was drawn to the group primarily by the promise of drugs and women. His time with the group included a stint in London working for the Church of Scientology between November 1968 and April 1969, a period during which he observed Manson's shift toward the ideology of Helter Skelter.
Davis's criminal involvement was significant. While he was not present for the Tate or LaBianca murders, he was present when Manson cut Gary Hinman's ear in July 1969 and participated in the August 1969 murder of ranch hand Donald 'Shorty' Shea. In November 1969, he was also present during the death of John Philip Haught, known as 'Zero'. Davis later disputed official accounts of that event, claiming the firearm involved was a semi-automatic pistol incapable of Russian roulette, contradicting prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's assertion that it was a revolver.
Following a period in hiding, Davis surrendered to authorities in December 1970. In 1972, he was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and robbery, receiving a life sentence. During his long incarceration, he became a prison preacher and maintained a clean disciplinary record starting in 1980. Although parole boards deemed him suitable for release on seven occasions between 2010 and 2021, sitting governors consistently reversed these decisions. A 2022 panel ultimately denied him parole, citing a lack of empathy. Davis died in custody at the California Medical Facility on September 11, 2026.
