How a rejected teenager became one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation
In short: Carey Mulligan was once told by a famous screenwriter to marry a lawyer instead of pursuing acting. She ignored the advice, writing letters to industry legends until she secured her first audition. Today, she is a decorated performer with three Academy Award nominations and a career defined by intense, transformative roles.
Born in London in 1985, Mulligan’s path to the screen was far from conventional. Despite her parents' disapproval of her acting ambitions, she remained steadfast in her vocation. Her persistence eventually paid off when an introduction facilitated by screenwriter Julian Fellowes led to her film debut in the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. By 2009, she achieved a major breakthrough with her leading role in An Education, earning a BAFTA Award and her first Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of a teenage girl.
Mulligan is widely recognized for her ability to inhabit complex, often wounded characters. Whether playing a folk singer in Inside Llewyn Davis or a grieving mother in Wildlife, critics have consistently praised her emotional range. Her performance in the 2020 thriller Promising Young Woman further cemented her status as a powerhouse, earning her a second Academy Award nomination and a Critics' Choice Movie Award. In 2023, she portrayed Felicia Montealegre in the biopic Maestro, a role that garnered her a third Academy Award nomination.
Beyond her film work, Mulligan has maintained a significant presence on stage and in television. Her Broadway debut in the 2008 revival of The Seagull earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination, and she later received a Tony Award nomination for her work in Skylight. In 2025, she was honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to drama. Outside of her professional life, she is a dedicated advocate, serving as an ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society since 2012 and War Child since 2014, reflecting a commitment to causes that resonate with her personal history.
