How an Egyptian-born Greek singer became a global icon and a celestial namesake
In short: Demis Roussos sold over 60 million albums, evolving from a progressive rock pioneer in Aphrodite's Child to an unlikely, kaftan-wearing sex symbol. His operatic voice transcended borders, topping charts from the UK to Japan, while his life journey spanned from an Alexandrian childhood to a hijacked flight and asteroid naming.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1946, Artemios "Demis" Ventouris-Roussos was shaped by a cosmopolitan upbringing. His musical foundation was built in the Greek Church Byzantine choir, influenced by jazz and traditional Arabic sounds. After his family lost their possessions during the 1956 Suez Crisis, they relocated to Greece, where Roussos began his professional ascent. He first gained international attention as a member of the progressive rock band Aphrodite's Child, notably contributing to their cult classic final album, 666, which drew inspiration from the Book of Revelation.
Roussos launched a prolific solo career in 1971 with the hit "We Shall Dance." He became a dominant force in the mid-1970s, with his single "Forever and Ever" reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1976. His vocal style was distinct, leading to collaborations with Vangelis on projects ranging from the film score for Sex Power to the Blade Runner soundtrack. Beyond his music, Roussos was a public figure who candidly addressed his struggles with obesity, co-authoring the book A Question of Weight in 1982 after losing 50 kilograms in 10 months.
His influence extended into unexpected corners of culture, from the Bollywood film Sholay to the TV play Abigail's Party. He remained active until his final years, touring and recording, including a 2009 comeback album. Roussos passed away in 2015 at age 68. His legacy is preserved not only in his extensive discography and the museum established by his children, Emily and Cyril, but also in the heavens: asteroid 279226 Demisroussos, discovered in 2009, was officially named in his honor in 2014.
