How a young Ivorian DJ became the king of a global dance music movement
In short: Born Ange Didier Houon, DJ Arafat transformed the Ivorian Coupé-Décalé genre into a worldwide phenomenon. From his early days in Abidjan to international stardom, he defined a flashy, high-energy lifestyle. His sudden death in 2019 left a void in African music, but his legacy as an icon remains unmatched.
DJ Arafat, born in 1986, began his career at age 14 in the Yopougon district of Abidjan. His stage name was bestowed by Lebanese friends who saw him as hardcore, a nod to Yasser Arafat. He became a central figure in Coupé-Décalé, a genre that emerged during the Ivory Coast civil war in the early 2000s. The term, meaning 'to cheat and run away,' provided a much-needed sense of hope and uplift for youth during a period of national hardship. The music is characterized by deep bass, fast percussion, and hip-hop-style vocals.
By 2009, Arafat had become a star, eventually releasing 11 albums over a fifteen-year career. His influence expanded globally as sports stars popularized the genre's dance moves, helping him gain a massive following in France and across Francophone Africa. He was a symbol of a flashy, well-dressed aesthetic, often featuring his passion for motorcycles in his work, including his 2019 hit 'Moto Moto'. His dedication to the craft earned him back-to-back 'Best Artist of the Year' titles at the Coupé-Décalé Awards in 2016 and 2017.
Arafat's life ended tragically following a motorcycle collision in the Angre neighborhood of Abidjan on August 11, 2019. He succumbed to a skull fracture the following morning. His death triggered an intense public outpouring, with fans gathering at his home and the hospital to mourn. The intensity of his following was such that police struggled to manage crowds, and rumors even led some fans to exhume his grave. Today, he is remembered as an ambassador of Ivorian music whose work brought a local dance style to the global stage.
