In short: Founded in 1950 with a $300 investment, Elektra Records grew from a college dorm room project into a powerhouse of folk, rock, and alternative music. Its founder, Jac Holzman, famously altered the spelling of Electra to add a solid, commercial bite, forever changing the identity of a legendary label.

Elektra Records began in 1950 when Jac Holzman and Paul Rickolt each invested $300 in a venture launched from Holzman's dorm room at St. John's College. Holzman chose the name Elektra, deliberately swapping the 'C' for a 'K' to emulate the perceived strength of the Kodak brand. The label initially struggled, with its first LP, a collection of art songs, selling few copies. However, it soon found its footing by championing folk music, recording artists like Judy Collins and protest singers such as Phil Ochs, while providing a platform for Josh White during the McCarthyite era.

By the mid-1960s, Elektra’s expansion into pop and rock cemented its cultural influence. The label became a home for psychedelic icons including The Doors, Love, and The Stooges. This era of experimentation was supported by the profits from Nonesuch Records, a classical budget label launched by Holzman in 1964. The label’s reach even extended beyond Earth; in 1977, recordings from its Nonesuch Explorer Series were included on the Voyager Golden Discs, sent into deep space aboard the Voyager probes.

The label’s history is marked by complex corporate shifts and high-stakes drama. In 1994, the label faced a major legal challenge when Metallica sued to terminate their contract, citing a California labor law regarding personal service agreements. The dispute, which highlighted the band's low 14% royalty rate, was eventually settled. By the late 1990s, the label struggled with a reputation for poor promotion, earning the nickname 'Neglektra' from some artists. Despite these turbulent periods, Elektra has remained a resilient entity, surviving multiple mergers, including its 2022 consolidation with 300 Entertainment and its 2024 integration into the Atlantic Music Group.
