In short: Known as the 'Dark Angel,' Ewa Demarczyk transformed complex poetry into intense musical dramas. Her unique stage presence and vocal power earned her comparisons to Édith Piaf, helping define the 'sung poetry' genre through her haunting interpretations of classical and avant-garde literary works.

Ewa Demarczyk (1941–2020) was a defining figure in Polish music, celebrated for her ability to fuse dramatic theatrical expression with sophisticated vocal art. A graduate of both a conservatory and the Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts, her performances were less like standard songs and more like miniature, intense musical dramas. This approach helped cement the 'sung poetry' genre, where she interpreted demanding works by poets ranging from classical figures like Goethe and Rilke to Polish writers such as Julian Tuwim and Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński.

Her rise to prominence began in the early 1960s. After starting at the student cabaret Cyrulik, she joined the renowned Piwnica pod Baranami, where she collaborated with composer Zygmunt Konieczny for four years. Her breakthrough came in 1963, when she achieved significant success at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole and was named the best artist of the year by Polish journalists. This success led to international stages, including performances at Paris's Olympia and prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the Chicago Theatre.

Demarczyk's commercial reach was immense. Her 1967 debut album, featuring Konieczny's compositions, reached platinum status with over 100,000 copies sold. Later, a Russian-language release via the state-owned label Melodiya achieved sales in the millions. Despite her massive popularity, she remained a dedicated artist of high culture, receiving numerous honors including the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Gold Fryderyk Award for Lifetime Achievements.
