Before he was a Hollywood icon, Harvey Keitel spent a decade as a stenographer.
In short: Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents, Harvey Keitel’s path to stardom was unconventional. After serving in the Marines at sixteen, he spent ten years recording courtroom proceedings before pursuing acting. His career eventually defined the New Hollywood era, marked by intense collaborations with Martin Scorsese and a reputation for grit.
Keitel’s rise began in the late 1960s when he auditioned for Martin Scorsese, securing the lead in the director's debut, Who's That Knocking at My Door. This partnership became a cornerstone of his career, spanning six films including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and 2019's The Irishman. His early work established him as a master of portraying morally complex, tough characters, a persona he frequently revisited throughout the 1980s.
Despite his success, Keitel’s career saw significant pivots. In 1979, he was originally selected to play Captain Willard in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. However, after one week of filming in the Philippines, Coppola replaced him, feeling the actor struggled to portray the character as a passive observer. This setback did not stall his momentum; by the 1990s, he had successfully expanded his range through roles in Reservoir Dogs, The Piano, and Bad Lieutenant, earning an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Bugsy.
Beyond his screen work, Keitel served as co-president of the Actors Studio for over two decades, from 1995 to 2017. His influence extends into unexpected corners of pop culture, including appearances in music videos for Jay-Z and Beyoncé, and a long-running advertising campaign for Direct Line. Today, he remains a versatile presence, balancing independent projects with collaborations with directors like Wes Anderson, while maintaining a deep connection to his heritage, evidenced by his 2017 honorary citizenship in Romania.
