In short: Recorded in just 35 minutes by musicians who did not even know the melody, Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive was never intended to be a hit. Yet, this accidental masterpiece transcended its disco origins to become a global symbol of resilience, covered by everyone from country stars to rock bands.

The genesis of I Will Survive lies in the professional frustration of songwriter Dino Fekaris, who was fired by Motown Records in the mid-1970s. After finding inspiration in a theme song he had previously written, he teamed up with Freddie Perren to craft the track. However, the song sat unrecorded for two years until Gloria Gaynor was asked to produce a B-side for her 1978 album, Love Tracks. During a rushed three-hour session, the musicians improvised the backing track for I Will Survive in only 35 minutes, believing it would never be played.

Gaynor, who recorded her vocals while wearing a back brace due to a recent concert injury, identified deeply with the lyrics. Despite her conviction that the song was a hit, her label insisted on releasing it as the B-side to Substitute. The song only gained traction after Gaynor’s husband brought the record to Studio 54 DJ Richie Kaczor, whose enthusiastic support triggered a wave of popularity that forced the label to promote it as an A-side. It eventually topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1979 and has since sold over 15 million copies worldwide.

The song's legacy is defined by its versatility and cultural resonance. In 1998, it became the unofficial anthem for the French men's national football team, and in 2016, the Library of Congress selected the original recording for preservation in the National Recording Registry. While it has been reimagined as an R&B ballad by Chantay Savage and a tongue-in-cheek rock track by Cake, the original remains a definitive disco staple. Its enduring power lies in its message of survival, which Gaynor herself summarized as a universal desire to believe in one's own strength.
