In short: Known as Mr. Excitement, Jackie Wilson was a master showman whose dynamic stage presence and multi-octave range influenced icons like Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Yet, behind the fame, Wilson endured a life of financial exploitation, personal tragedy, and a final, public collapse that left him incapacitated for nine years.

Born in 1934 in Highland Park, Michigan, Jackie Wilson rose to prominence as a lead singer for Billy Ward and His Dominoes before launching a prolific solo career in 1957. With hits like 'Lonely Teardrops' and 'Higher and Higher,' he became a bridge between rhythm and blues and the emerging soul genre. His performances were legendary for their intensity, featuring back-flips, splits, and a signature style of engaging the audience that earned him his famous moniker.

Despite his commercial success, Wilson’s career was marred by systemic mismanagement. His manager, Nat Tarnopol, held power of attorney and systematically defrauded Wilson of royalties, leaving the singer broke even at the peak of his fame in 1961. While a 1975 federal indictment eventually found that Brunswick Records had indeed cheated its artists, a legal battle for Wilson’s stolen earnings never materialized because he had already suffered a catastrophic heart attack on stage at the Latin Casino in New Jersey.

The singer’s personal life was equally turbulent, marked by a 1961 shooting by a girlfriend, multiple arrests, and profound grief following the 1970 murder of his teenage son. Wilson remained in a minimally conscious state from his 1975 collapse until his death in 1984 at age 49. His legacy, however, remains cemented in the annals of music history, recognized by his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and his enduring influence on generations of performers who sought to emulate his electrifying stagecraft.
