The urban folk music that defines the Greek mainstream
In short: Laïko is more than just a genre; it is the sonic bridge between Greece's ancient folklore and its modern urban identity. From the smoky taverns of the 1930s to the high-energy nightclubs of today, it has evolved into the primary heartbeat of Greek popular music.
Laïko, which translates to 'folk' or 'of the people,' emerged as a distinct genre following the commercialization of Rebetiko music in the 1930s. While the Greek discography was previously dominated by demotica and elaphro tragoudi, the first Rebetiko recordings fundamentally shifted the landscape. Markos Vamvakaris famously noted that these recordings were the first to capture 'laïka' songs, paving the way for the mainstream 'laïko tragoudi' that followed.
The genre reached its classic peak during the 1960s and 1970s. During this era, it was defined by a blend of traditional heritage and urban sensibilities. Key figures like Nikos Xanthopoulos and composers such as Mimis Plessas helped establish the sound, while legendary lyricists like Vassilis Tsitsanis and Manolis Chiotis maintained the connection to the Rebetiko era. This period also saw a sophisticated fusion where artists combined the traditions of éntekhno with laïko, creating a complex musical tapestry that remains influential today.
In the early 1980s, 'contemporary laïka' emerged, eventually becoming the nation's mainstream music. This modern iteration incorporates Western influences like pop and dance music, often played in nightclubs known as 'hellinadika.' However, this evolution is not without controversy. Critics often scrutinize contemporary laïko-pop for its 'musical clichés' and 'slogan-like lyrics,' sparking a debate over whether the genre remains a 'genuine' expression of the people or has become a hybrid that loses its traditional soul.
