In short: Born in the recording studios of 1960s South Africa, the Mahotella Queens defined the mbaqanga genre. Despite the oppressive era of apartheid, shifting industry trends, and the loss of key members, this iconic group has reinvented itself for over sixty years, bridging the gap between traditional rhythms and global stages.

Established in 1964 by talent scout Rupert Bopape, the Mahotella Queens were designed to compete with popular girl groups of the era. Their signature sound, known as mbaqanga or mgqashiyo, fused traditional African rhythms with modern electric instrumentation. This upbeat style was anchored by the contrast between multi-part female harmonies and the deep, resonant vocals of male 'groaner' Simon 'Mahlathini' Nkabinde, supported by the Makgona Tsohle Band.

The group’s history is marked by significant internal and external shifts. In 1972, a dispute with Bopape led to a temporary split, forcing the brand to continue with new members while the originals performed under a different name. By the 1980s, the group achieved international acclaim, bolstered by global projects like Paul Simon's Graceland and their own successful European tours. Their resilience was tested again in the late 1990s following the deaths of key collaborators like West Nkosi and Marks Mankwane, yet the Queens persisted, recruiting new talent to maintain their legacy.

Today, the Mahotella Queens remain a vital force in South African music. While the original line-up has evolved—Hilda Tloubatla remains the last active original member—the group continues to record and perform, recently signing with Umsakazo Records in 2025. From their 1988 performance at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute to their 2026 concert series, they have proven that their music, which celebrates joy and healing, transcends generations and borders.
