In short: At age 21, Momoe Yamaguchi walked away from a massive career as a singer and actress. She retired in 1980, right when she was responsible for over a quarter of her agency's total sales, to focus entirely on her marriage. She has remained completely out of the public eye ever since.

Momoe Yamaguchi emerged as a teenage sensation in 1972 after appearing on the talent show Star Tanjō!. By the mid-1970s, she was a cultural phenomenon, known for her suggestive lyrics and a string of chart-topping hits. Her career was defined by a unique blend of professional control and intense public scrutiny. As her popularity grew, she began selecting her own songwriters, including the husband-and-wife team Ryudo Uzaki and Yoko Aki, who crafted her biggest hit, 'Yokosuka Story'.

Her life was frequently marked by the tension between her massive fame and a desire for personal stability. She faced significant challenges, including a public legal battle against her father, who attempted to exploit her success for financial gain. Despite these pressures, she maintained a consistent presence in Japanese media, appearing annually on the prestigious Kōhaku Uta Gassen music show until her departure from the industry. Her films, particularly those co-starring Tomokazu Miura, cemented her status as a national icon.

In 1980, Yamaguchi shocked the nation by announcing her retirement to marry Miura. Her farewell concert at the Nippon Budokan was a massive financial event, and her subsequent autobiography, Aoi Toki, became a bestseller. Since leaving show business, she has avoided all performances and public appearances, dedicating her life to her family and hobbies like quilt making. Despite her absence, her influence persists through constant re-releases of her work, ongoing record royalties, and the frequent covering of her songs by new generations of artists.
