How a Stanford MBA student reshaped the digital advertising landscape for Google and YouTube
In short: Before leading YouTube, Neal Mohan was the architect behind the advertising strategies that defined modern internet commerce. From a pivotal 400-slide presentation at DoubleClick to securing his retention at Google with a massive payout, Mohan has spent decades quietly influencing the platforms that dominate our digital lives today.
Born in 1973 in Lafayette, Indiana, Neal Mohan’s career trajectory was marked by early exposure to global perspectives, including seven years of schooling in India. After earning his electrical engineering degree from Stanford in 1996 and an MBA from the same institution in 2005, he became a central figure in the evolution of online advertising. His work at NetGravity and later DoubleClick established his reputation for operational efficiency, particularly during the turbulent aftermath of the dot-com bubble.
A defining moment in his career occurred in 2005, when he and David Rosenblatt developed a comprehensive 400-slide business plan for DoubleClick. This strategy, which pivoted the company toward ad exchange technology and networks, proved so robust that it reportedly continues to influence Google’s business models. Following Google’s 2007 acquisition of DoubleClick for US$3.1 billion, Mohan became instrumental in integrating the two entities. His value to the tech giant was underscored in 2011, when Google reportedly paid him US$100 million to decline a chief product officer role at Twitter.
Transitioning to YouTube in 2015 as Chief Product Officer, Mohan oversaw the development of major services including YouTube Music, YouTube TV, and YouTube Shorts. Upon succeeding Susan Wojcicki as CEO in February 2023, he expanded his influence to include complex content moderation policies and media literacy initiatives. His leadership has been widely recognized, earning him titles such as Time CEO of the Year in 2025 and inclusion on various lists of influential business leaders. Beyond his corporate roles, he remains active in academic and public service, contributing to the Stanford Graduate School of Business advisory board and the Council on Foreign Relations.
